Itinerary for Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) Backpacking Trip

3 Nights / 4 Days
We will depart from Mumbai by flight to Varanasi. We have accommodations arranged at a super hip and centrally located hostel that is backpacker-friendly. (Who doesn’t enjoy bunk beds!) After a brief rest, we will embark on a journey to celebrate the Ganges River by walking along its sacred banks. One highly recommended tourist activity is taking a boat ride along the river. In the evening, we will return to Dashashwamedh Ghat, either by boat or on foot, to witness the renowned Maha Ganga Aarti at 7 pm, either from the steps or on the boats.
We will spend the night at the hostel.
This morning, between 5:30 and 6:00, prepare your cameras because a captivating sunrise awaits you through the cold, foggy morning. I highly recommend an early morning boat ride for this experience. Afterward, we will return to the hotel. Following breakfast, we will explore the northern stretch of the main Ghats, beginning with Man Mandir Ghat. This Ghat is noteworthy for its exquisite Rajput architecture, dating back to 1600. The observatory here still houses well-preserved astronomical instruments, which you can explore. Our next stop will be Manikarnika Ghat, the largest and most significant cremation Ghat, surpassing even Harishchandra Ghat in size. After this insightful exploration, we will head back to the hostel to relax.
This morning, we will set out for Sarnath, which is situated only 12 km from the sacred Hindu city of Varanasi. Sarnath holds historical significance as it is the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first teachings on the Dharma after attaining enlightenment. It is one of the four holy Buddhist sites personally endorsed by Buddha for pilgrimage. Sarnath offers a peaceful and serene escape from the bustling crowds of Varanasi. A visit to Sarnath promises a tranquil experience, immersing you in a whole new world of serenity and spirituality.
Today, post breakfast. Catch the Morning flight from Varanasi Airport.
